📰 What's Happening Now
UPDATEDCOVID & disease entry requirements — what's current?
As of 2026, Japan has fully lifted all COVID-era entry requirements. No vaccination certificate or testing is needed. Standard quarantine rules for other diseases apply. Always check MHLW (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) for any new outbreak advisories before travel. Seasonal flu is common Oct–Mar; masks are still widely worn and respected in crowded spaces.
Japan is going more cashless — but cash still matters
PayPay, iD, Suica, and credit cards are now accepted at the vast majority of urban venues. 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and most chain restaurants accept QR payments. However, smaller local restaurants, rural towns, many vending machines, and temples/shrines remain cash-only. Carry ¥5,000–10,000 as backup. Apple Pay / Google Pay work at NFC-compatible readers.
Yen remains historically weak — great for tourists
The Japanese Yen has been at historically low levels against the USD, EUR, and GBP since 2022, making Japan exceptionally affordable for foreign tourists. Budget travelers can live well on ¥5,000–8,000/day. Watch for rapid fluctuations; exchange at 7-Bank ATMs or Wise for the best rates. Check xe.com or Google for live rates before exchanging.
Overtourism countermeasures at major sites
Several locations now restrict or charge for access: Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail charges ¥2,000 and has a daily visitor cap. Kyoto's Gion district restricts photography in some alleys. Kamakura's Enoshima Electric Railway charges ¥300/day sightseeing contribution. More locations are expected to follow. Book entry tickets in advance for top sites like teamLab, DisneySea, and Universal Studios Japan.
Shinkansen network expansions and fare changes
The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga opened in March 2024, connecting Kanazawa–Fukui–Tsuruga. JR West and East have revised their IC card policies — some routes now require a Shinkansen-specific reservation via an app. The Chuo Linear Maglev (Tokyo–Nagoya) construction continues; opening delayed to post-2030. Japan Rail Pass prices increased in 2023; compare with individual ticket prices before purchasing.
Cherry blossom and autumn foliage crowd peaks
Cherry blossom season (late March – mid April) and autumn foliage (mid October – late November) are the two most crowded periods. Hotels in Kyoto, Nara, and Nikko book out 3–6 months ahead. Shoulder season alternatives: early May (Golden Week ends, but prices are high during GW itself), late November, and February are relatively quieter and cheaper.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for Japan
Japan has excellent healthcare but it is expensive without insurance. A single ER visit can cost ¥20,000–100,000+. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is highly recommended. Some prefectures have started foreigner-friendly medical navigation services. If you're staying long-term (>3 months), you're required to enroll in the National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) system.
eSIM works smoothly in Japan — best picks for 2026
eSIM adoption is now widespread. Top picks: Airalo Japan (affordable data-only plans), IIJmio Tourist eSIM (good coverage, fast activation), NTT Docomo international eSIM (premium, pricier). Most iPhones (14+) and recent Android flagships support eSIM. Physical SIM cards are still available at major airports. Starlink mobile coverage expanding in rural areas.
